The origin of walking stick and worship stool
The first day of master was hospitalized, he laid on the bed and fell in sleep very soon. A week of kowtowing in every three steps exhausted him. The camp on the hillside is extremely cold during the February (lunar calendar), bothers who followed master said they were frequently waked up due to the cold. Master slept in a tricycle which could not block any wind, therefore the temperature inside is similar to outside. He got up at 2 am everyday to prepare his worship trip. The sleeping time was only two to three hours, which did not allow any sufficient rest. Doctor suggested he should stay in hospital for ten days, he said it is too long, he would to stay for three days instead.
到了第三天，膝关节病情并没好转，继续住院治疗。第十天的时候，师父说出院以后，明天可以去朝山了。做医生的妙勤师兄坚决反对，他说：“师父，您最明白自己的情况。刚才那几步，您是强忍疼痛走的，不想让我们担心而已。实际上，您现在左膝关节根本不能受力，走路都很困难，哪能再做跪下、起来这样大幅度的运动？不信您试试。这样下去，膝关节会造成很严重的永久性创伤，以后很难再恢复。”他强烈要求师父继续治疗。
On the third day, the illness on his knees was not getting better, he had to stay. On the tenth day, he said let’s resume the worship trip right after I am out of hospital. Bother Miaoqin, who was a doctor strongly disagree. He said: Master, you know your condition best, the several steps you took a while ago actually hurt you very much, you did not show it just do not want us to worry. In fact, your left knee could not bear any pressure, it is very hard for you to walk. How could you make the movement such as knee on the floor and get up? You will believe me when you try. If you insist, the damage on the knee will be even more sever and permanent, and could not be recover.” He strongly insisted master to keep do the treatment.
师父没有回答，只是缓缓地站起来，慢慢地弯下身去，想做个叩拜的动作。当师父的手触到地面时，停止了，好久没有动。我这才明白，师父的腿伤有多严重：很艰难地拜下去，是他能做到的极限动作。靠手臂和身体的力量，他无法支撑自己站起来。能拜下去，但起不来，这种身体状况他无法继续朝山，这就是现实！我默默地走到师父旁边蹲下，扶着他慢慢起身。过了一会儿，妙林说：“师父，现在您腿受伤了，不能朝山，佛菩萨会理解的，也一定会加持的。”
Master did not answer, he just stood up and bent over slowly, he was trying to knee on the floor. When his hand touched the floor, his stopped. For a long time, he did not move. I suddenly understood that how sever his injury was. Bent over was the most he could do. Only using the strength of his arm and body, he could not support him to stand up again. This situation prevented him to continue his worship trip, which was the reality. I walked to his side, got down silently, and slowly helped him to get up. After a period of silence, Brother Miaolin said, master, your knee is injury and it prevents you from the worship trip, Buddha and Bodhisattva will understand and they will bless you.
师父无声地点点头，双目微闭，进入禅定状态。我们几个人也不做声，合起双眼。当我睁开眼时，看见师父的脸上挂着泪滴。这是我第二次看见师父流泪。第一次是在2010年跟随师父在香港弘法的时候，提到建寺初期的艰辛和佛力的加持，老人家一度哽咽不能语。
Master nod without any words, slightly closed his eyes and entering the deep mediation. We did not make any sound, just closed our eyes. After I opened my eyes, I saw tears on Master’s face. This is the second time I saw tears on his face, the first time was in Hongkong, when he mentioned the hardships and Buddha’s blessing at the beginning of restoring the monastery. At that moment, he was chocking and could not speak for a while.
我不忍再看师父，侧过脸去，看见妙林的脸上也有泪痕。这是我们听到师父缓慢而清晰的声音：“佛菩萨慈悲！你们帮我去买拐杖吧，再请寺院的木工师傅做个带轱辘的拜凳。治疗一段时间，朝山继续，拄着拐也要拜到九华山！”
I could not bear to look at master so I turned my face away, I also saw tears on Miaolin’s face. At this moment, we heard master’s slow but clear voice: “Buddha and Bodhisattva are compassionate. Please buy me a walk stick and make me a worship stool with wheels. I will continue the therapy for a while and then resume the worship trip. I will kowtow in every three steps until we reach Jiuhua Mountain even if with walk stick”.
几天后，师父出院了，当老人家返回朝山路上的时候，我们看到的是一位拄着拐杖、推着拜凳行进在朝山路上的伟岸的身影。师父乐观而坚定的神情将这有些悲壮的画面变得那么鼓舞人心。拐杖、手推拜凳，就像师父的一对老友在朝山路上给了他有力的支撑。那个一路之上维修了多次的手推拜凳还一直陪伴师父完成了朝礼九华山的心愿。
Several days later, master was out of hospital. When he resumed his trip, we saw a big and tall figure with a walking stick and pushed a worship stool walked on the road. Master’s optimistic and determined facial expression made this originally heroically tragic picture so inspiring. Walking stick and worship stool just like master’s old friends, give him strong support on the worship road. The worship stool which was fixed multiple times finally accompanies master to complete the worship trip to Jiuhua Mountain.
